︎12/7 THE BAG

final video documentation:

::::::::::Process:::::::::

1. Clean the coffee pods:

2. Squash some of them for texture:

3. Connect pods using hole punch and jump rings:

4: Make a pattern:

5. Cover the inner surface with a sheer fabric:
6. Add cottons between two pieces of fabric:

7. Put them all together, and add a chain handle (and another layer of fabric inside of the bag for shielding the electronics):

8.Punch a hole on one (silver one in middle of the second row where user’s arm will rest when naturally carrying the bag) of the pods for the wire to go through, connecting the aluminum foil on the outside of the bag with the board inside for capacitive touch sensing.

9. Solder all the electronic components together:

10. Make and upload the code:

head-turn-triggered LEDs

code:

Final design for the crown:
connection:  I used the Nano board for the turn-detect code, and the battery pack of 4.5v. I soldered the LED stripe to the connecting wires to the wearable shield, which is also soldered with female electrical connector for mounting of the Nano board.

Wrap:
I wrap the physical computing components with a piece of light blue satin for aesthetic purpose. It covers the the parts and also let the light diffuse through.

Mount:

The crown is designed so that the physical computing part can rest inside. It is U-shaped, so it holds the part in place while making it easy to mount it on and off for adjustment. The LED strip covers the whole opening frontal area. The board and battery fits tightly within the designed nesting space.

Among our five senses, vision gives us the most information during our everyday life. Different from to smell, to taste, to touch, and to listen, to see need our front surface of our face directing the seeing object. This alignment of the direction of the attention and the body gesture give birth to this project. While normal seeing and looking involve a steady movement, a sudden surprise that will cause our quick attention shift and thus cause a quicker head movement. So when we have been startled there must be something surprising. It will be too late to capture that if we need to reach our phone and open the camera application to take a snap. This project allows user to take a picture while turning their head with a particular speed. Possible application could be capturing the hit-and-run, a fleeing deer, or a sublime thunder and lighting!

︎ 9/26 Motor study

This wearable uses a potentiometer to control the hand movement. I 3D printed the hand and glue it on the motor, then cut the fabric to hide all the wires. The board, the 3D designed hand and the code is as follows:

︎ 9/21 Low tech wearables: Magnet dress

The concept is to track body movements and metal encounterance. So the dress is made with grided coordinates, and each coordinate is accompanied by a magnet. When walking, or doing movements with the body, the magnets will make the dress form different shapes. The idea is better when manifested with a stiffer material, the demo material is too soft.
